Quick Fixes for Your Humming Garbage Disposal

SAFETY FIRST: Always disconnect power before touching your disposal!

Common Disposal Problems

In Yuba City, we often see garbage disposals fail due to "hard water" buildup or people putting too many fibrous vegetables down the drain. Here are the three most common symptoms:

1. The Humming Sound

If the motor hums but the blades don't turn, something is likely jammed in the flywheel. You can often clear this using an Allen wrench in the bottom of the unit (the "self-service" port).

2. No Sound at All

The unit likely tripped its internal breaker. Look for the small red "Reset" button on the bottom of the disposal. Push it in and try again.

3. Slow Drainage or Leaking

This is often a sign of a worn-out seal or a clog in the P-trap. If you see water pooling under your sink, it's time to call an insured Handyman.

Maintenance Checklist

  • Never put grease, coffee grounds, or eggshells down the drain.
  • Always run cold water while the unit is on.
  • Grind a few ice cubes once a month to sharpen the blades.

When to Replace vs. Repair

If your disposal is more than 10 years old and has a cracked housing or a burning smell, repair is usually not cost-effective. Boxpro Express can help you select a new, high-efficiency model and handle the installation in under an hour.
